The European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) is one of the EU’s most practical travel benefits, giving residents access to state healthcare when visiting other member states.
What it covers
The card entitles holders to necessary medical treatment on the same terms as locals — sometimes free, sometimes at a reduced cost — during temporary stays.
What it doesn’t
It is not a substitute for travel insurance: it won’t cover private treatment, repatriation or non-medical costs. Sensible travellers carry both.
For non-EU visitors, comprehensive private travel insurance remains essential.
