‘Strategic autonomy’ has become a buzzword in Brussels, capturing the EU’s ambition to depend less on others in a more uncertain world.
What it means
The idea spans defence, energy, technology and critical supply chains — reducing vulnerabilities exposed by recent crises and ensuring Europe can act decisively in its own interest.
Easier said than done
Differing national priorities, budget constraints and the pull of long-standing alliances make true autonomy a long-term project rather than a quick fix.
Still, the direction is set: a Europe that aspires to be a more capable and independent global actor.
